Everyone Needs a Minion

Recently a pair of local talk radio hosts made some shortsighted comments on the air about cyclists and they apologized for it, on the air and on Facebook. The responses to the apology on Facebook were insensitive, at best. They talked a lot about weight issues and it brought to mind what Today I Can is supposed to be about, a minion attitude, as opposed to my personal nemesis, the Icant. If this doesn't make any sense, read the article and to those hosts, I am sorry, you are not who they said you were. I hope this helps.

If It Waddles Like a Duck

This is what Today I Can is all about, finding those areas of strength we were all gifted in and focusing on soaring in those instead of waddling in our weakness. For me riding a bike made sense. For you, it might be running, it could be lifting weights, hot yoga or just going for a walk. I just went for a walk every day to start my journey, I was way too big to ride a bike at first. If riding a bike sounds like fun, we can help you get on one without spending an arm and a leg, that is something else we are working toward, getting folks that want to be more active, what they need to do so. There isn’t a book to be sold or a membership to be purchased, nobody gets anything out of acting now on this besides you, so just do it.

While it was really cool that my son Will said he wanted to start riding with me this spring, it struck me how awesome it was to be able to say yes.

Today I Didn't

One of the tougher things I have found in trying to lead a healthier lifestyle is rebounding from a bad decision or from a period where I can't exercise. Sometimes it's related to injury, or weather or just life making me busy. I hate those times, I really do but rebounding is part of the deal.

Just Listen to Hipsters or Pete

As you may know I went on a bike odyssey and rode my bike from Canada to Mexico largely down the Pacific Coast. In preparing for the ride I spent a lot of time visiting various bike clubs and blogs hosted by riders throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. I happened across a story about a twenty something year old programmer in Portland. He had decided to take a lower paying job that was close enough to his house for him to commute by bicycle. He commented how the money he didn't spend on an automobile could be put toward his retirement and since that was pretax his overall net was more without a car. In addition he had a lot more free time because he didn't spend an hour each day in traffic and looking for a parking spot. I thought how is a 20 something hipster teaching a 50 year old CPA about finances, because that made a ton of sense. I filed it away for future reference.

Riding with life's experiences

Just like life, riding a bicycle comes with it's share of adversity. Most of it revolves around the elements, heat, cold, rain, wind and gravity (aka hills). How we deal with that adversity has everything to do with how our lives and our bike rides will go.

Roller Coasters and Corny Dogs

I came up with a counter argument to the Not Fair claim that my kids often deployed when life dealt them something they deemed unfair, it was one both my kids hated which made it very effective because eventually they quit saying Not Fair. I just told them this, “you know ... life is not fair. In fact it's so unfair that they made a special day called Fair Day that only comes once a year. On Fair Day, they close down school and you get to go downtown, ride roller coasters and eat corny dogs but today is not that day, it's Not Fair Day. So while I realize it's not fair, there is nothing I can do about it, my hands are tied.”

A tough lesson for me to learn as well as my kids it turns out.

Every once in a while we make a mistake and say we did something alone. Today I was reminded that even when I don't ride with others, I never ride alone.
