So You're Looking For a Bike...

I may be a little bit biased, but I think riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get in shape. It’s low-impact, not particularly complicated, there are lots of ways you can do it, and you can do it just about anywhere. But, don’t take my word for it. Instead, take my friends’ words for it. In this post, I gathered some of my riding buddies, some of whom I’ve known for many years, and asked them to weigh in on the subject of riding a bike for fitness & exercise.

If you’ve read some of blog posts, like The Accountant, then you’re pretty familiar with the whole point of Today I Can. If I can do something like that, then there’s really no excuse for you. Let me give a little bit of encouragement, though, because that’s the other part of Today I Can.

It seems like there’s never any shortage of “fixin’ to” do something productive. What about “startin’ to” do it?

In 2016, my ride or die was cycling 5,555 miles. Where’d I get the number from? And did I actually ride that many miles? Click to find out. (Ok, #55 was my number in high school sports)

How does an accountant who weighed in at 350 lbs lose over 120 lbs? With a lot of inspiration, and one day at a time.

Everyone Needs a Minion

Recently a pair of local talk radio hosts made some shortsighted comments on the air about cyclists and they apologized for it, on the air and on Facebook. The responses to the apology on Facebook were insensitive, at best. They talked a lot about weight issues and it brought to mind what Today I Can is supposed to be about, a minion attitude, as opposed to my personal nemesis, the Icant. If this doesn't make any sense, read the article and to those hosts, I am sorry, you are not who they said you were. I hope this helps.

If It Waddles Like a Duck

This is what Today I Can is all about, finding those areas of strength we were all gifted in and focusing on soaring in those instead of waddling in our weakness. For me riding a bike made sense. For you, it might be running, it could be lifting weights, hot yoga or just going for a walk. I just went for a walk every day to start my journey, I was way too big to ride a bike at first. If riding a bike sounds like fun, we can help you get on one without spending an arm and a leg, that is something else we are working toward, getting folks that want to be more active, what they need to do so. There isn’t a book to be sold or a membership to be purchased, nobody gets anything out of acting now on this besides you, so just do it.

While it was really cool that my son Will said he wanted to start riding with me this spring, it struck me how awesome it was to be able to say yes.

Perspective on Food

When I was a kid and I was running fever and had a headache, my mom would make me a cold compress, give me some aspirin and let me know it would make me feel better. If I had a belly ache, I'd tell my mom and out would come the Pepto-Bismol that crazy big silver spoon and a reassurance that this would make me feel better. If I came home from school after I had a rough day, my mom would feel bad for me and she would fix me a snack and set it in front of me, turn on Gilligan's Island and I'd feel better. I don't know that she was doing anything but trying to make her little boy happy but the thought was there for me, this made me feel better.  So I had it all figured it out, got a headache? Take an aspirin.  Got a tummy ache? Take PeptoBismol. Got a heart ache? Eat some Cheetos. She's not a bad mom, it's not her fault, she just didn't know that's what I was thinking, but it was and it got worse.

Today I Didn't

One of the tougher things I have found in trying to lead a healthier lifestyle is rebounding from a bad decision or from a period where I can't exercise. Sometimes it's related to injury, or weather or just life making me busy. I hate those times, I really do but rebounding is part of the deal.
